Marina di Praia
A narrow inlet carved into the cliffs below Praiano, Marina di Praia is reached by descending roughly fifty steps cut directly into the rock — and that small act of commitment is exactly what keeps it from feeling overrun. At the bottom, the cove opens into a small dark-sand beach flanked by cliff walls that turn amber and rose around 19:00 in the summer months, when the light comes in almost horizontal off the water.
The Africana Famous Club, opened in 1963 and carved into the cave beside the beach, still operates here — its glass dance floor sits above the sea. Next door, Alfonso a Mare serves fish at tables practically on the shore.

People who come back tend to arrive by 10:00 — the steps put off a certain kind of visitor, but not enough of them by afternoon. A taxi boat from Positano's Marina Grande (€15–20) skips the stairs entirely. Bring water; there is nothing to buy at the cove itself.
The story behind Marina di Praia
The name Praia comes from the Latin plaga, meaning shore — one of the oldest place names on the Amalfi Coast — and the cove itself was the sole landing point of the ancient settlement of Plagiunum. Through the Middle Ages it functioned as the working heart of the community: boats were built here, fishing nets mended, and fish cured and salted for trade.
The cove also served as a timber depot. Wood brought down from the hills of Agerola via aerial ropeway was loaded onto ships at Marina di Praia and sold along the African coast. In the sixteenth century, the Torre a Mare — a watchtower — was raised above the inlet to watch for Saracen pirate raids, a structure you can see from the nearby Torre a Mare listing on Yeppa.

Descend via Via Mare from Praiano's centre — five minutes, about fifty rock-cut steps. Bus 12 stops at Marina di Praia; a SITA 24-hour pass (€10) covers the whole coast. The beach is free; sunbed hire runs €50 and up. May and September offer the most comfortable conditions with smaller crowds.
Summer (June–August) brings reliable sun and sea temperatures reaching 25–27°C by August; arrive early and expect crowds. September is widely considered the finest month — water still warm, light still long, the steps a little less trafficked. Spring (May) runs 15–23°C and suits anyone who prefers the cove quieter. Winter is mild but wet, and most beach facilities close.

Marina di Praia is absolutely magical. I loved that there are two sections to enjoy. The main beach is a pebble beach (definitely bring water shoes, I needed them), and the water is calm, stunning, and so comfortable. You’re nestled between two towering cliffs, and it feels like you’re in a secret, special place. The second section is just along the path by the boat tours, you can drop your things by the path and dive straight into the sea. Surrounded by boats, it honestly feels like you’re living in a movie. This spot has such a unique magic to it, I’ll never forget it.
We both enjoyed this cute little bay more than anything during our self-driven Amalfi Coast day trip. Bus tours don't seem to stop here, so it is mostly people who drive themselves, and therefore it is not overcrowded at all. It is truly magical, and you can even rent your own boat here. Would be nice to try next time!
Very beautiful beach situated in the cliffs, the best beach in the area. Also has nice restaurants, restrooms and bed rental available. Beds were around 70euro but have a spot for laying a towel down, but you'll need to get there early-ish to grab a spot.
Definitely check out this beach if you’re trying to enjoy the water on the amalfi coast. There’s a free and paid section. The free side has the sun in the morning, so this would be better as an afternoon/ late morning spot. The market nearby is pricey, so highly recommended bringing your own lunch & drinks.
This place is a (secret?) treasure! There’s a tiny hotel I would’ve stayed in in a heartbeat had I known about it. There’s a little beach not Sandy, but enchanting! A tiny marina with two competing places to rent a motor boat!!! It was definitely the best day of our three week honeymoon! Regardless of all the five star restaurant dinners and all the five star hotels we stayed in, this week little gift from the heavens, made our time there exactly what we had dreamed about.
