Tivoli Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Lorenzo)
The 47-metre Romanesque bell tower rising above Via del Duomo is the oldest thing still standing here, a survivor from the 11th-century rebuild that predates everything else you see. The rest of the facade — three arched portico, Baroque stonework, the narthex fresco of a Madonna of Mercy — came later, assembled across several centuries into something that reads less like a single vision than a slow accumulation of Tivoli's own history.
Step inside the single nave and the scale is quieter than you'd expect. Eight side chapels intercommunicate along the flanks, and the vault paintings by Angelo De Angelis, done in 1816, pull your eye upward toward his rendering of the Glory of St. Lawrence.

The ground beneath the cathedral was already sacred long before Christianity arrived — a Roman basilica in the forum of ancient Tibur, whose apse remains visible at the rear of the present building. Local tradition credits Pope Simplicius, a Tivoli native who held the papacy from 468 to 483, with establishing the first Christian church here, though the earliest written record appears in the Liber Pontificalis during the reign of Pope Leo III (795–816), which names a basilica dedicated to the martyr Lawrence within the city.
The Romanesque rebuild of the 11th and 12th centuries gave the cathedral its surviving bell tower. The Baroque structure you walk into today was ordered by Cardinal Giulio Roma, bishop of Tivoli from 1634 to 1652, and consecrated on 1 February 1641, with the portico completed in 1650. The sacristy was added shortly after by architect Giovanni Antonio De Rossi (1655–57), and the interior decoration — including De Angelis's vault paintings and Pietro Labruzzi's altarpiece of St Lawrence before his judge — dates largely from the early 19th century.

Trains from Roma Tiburtina reach Tivoli in under an hour for around three euros each way. Entry is free, but opening hours shift around services and seasons — call ahead on +39 0774-317192 before making it the anchor of your morning. Thirty minutes is enough for an unhurried visit.
