The square outside the Santuario della Madonna della Neve holds two things worth your attention before you even step inside: a 1711 fountain by Alessandro Specchi, and the quiet knowledge that this corner of Frosinone was once where the condemned came to pray. For centuries, the Madonna della Neve was considered the patroness of those awaiting execution — a history that gives the place a gravity the interior, large but plainly decorated, doesn't quite prepare you for.
The church sits about 1.5 km northeast of Frosinone's historic centre, in the district that bears its name, alongside the former Discalced Augustinian convent. It remains an active place of worship and a focal point of local devotion.

The story behind Santuario della Madonna della Neve
The site's origins are older than the current building. A small chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Neve stood here earlier, falling into neglect after brigandage and public executions ceased in the area. A reported miracle — the sweating of the Madonna statue — revived popular devotion and prompted a fundraising effort for a proper church. Construction began in May 1675; Bishop Mons. Degli Annibaleschi blessed the foundation stone on 21 November that year, and the completed temple was consecrated on 8 May 1678.
Administration eventually passed to the Discalced Augustinians, who built the adjacent convent. The sanctuary's growing fame drew notable visitors: in April 1676, Cardinal Francesco Orsini — later Pope Benedetto XIII — came to witness the reported miracle himself. World War II left Frosinone heavily damaged, and the sanctuary was not spared.
Good to know
Buses 1/D, 1/E, 3/B and 5/C connect the sanctuary to the train station. Internal parking is available beside the main entrance. Entry is free. The sanctuary observes regular Mass times, so plan around services if you want the space to yourself.

Historic sanctuary built in 1586 on the site of executions, to place the condemned under the protection of the Virgin. It became famous after the miracle of the sweating of the image of the Madonna on May 10, 1675, which attracted numerous faithful. The church was later enlarged and consecrated in 1678, and is now entrusted to the Discalced Augustinian Fathers. It is an important center of devotion in the city, with feasts on August 5 and May 10. It is located in the neighborhood of the same name, next to the convent and the Livio de Carolis fountain.
