Parco Matusa
A large rampant lion rendered in the grass is often the first thing that stops you. It marks the centre of what was once a football pitch, and the old stadium's main stand still rises at one edge of the park — not demolished, just repurposed, a concrete relic holding its ground among 130 newly planted trees.
Parco Matusa sits on the slopes above the Cosa river valley, about 2.5 hectares of paths and olive groves where Frosinone residents walk their dogs and loop the jogging track before the day properly begins. The Coreno stone underfoot, the local nursery stock in the ground — the place was built with deliberate attention to what already belonged here.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who come back tend to arrive early, before the sun clears the hill. The route itself is short — barely half a kilometre — so most visitors do two or three laps, stopping at the water fountain before cutting through the mini olive park on the way out. Events, when they happen, draw a local crowd that knows the space well.
The story behind Parco Matusa
The ground here was a football field — the Matusa stadium — before the Municipality of Frosinone began reimagining it as public green space. The transformation came through a collaboration between the city and the local Academy of Fine Arts, an unusual partnership that shaped both the design sensibility and the phased approach to construction.
Work was divided into four stages. The first delivered the bike path, a pedestrian route laid in Coreno stone, and the planting of over a hundred trees sourced from regional nurseries. The preserved stadium stand and the lion emblem in the grass are deliberate choices, keeping the memory of the old use visible rather than erasing it.
Good to know
Bus stop on Viale Giuseppe Mazzini is a four-minute walk away; the FL6 train line also serves the area. Free parking is nearby, and the park is wheelchair accessible. Dogs are welcome on a lead. There is no admission fee.
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the paths — warm without the full weight of the Lazio summer heat. Midsummer afternoons can be genuinely hot on the exposed sections, so morning or early evening visits make the most sense from June through August.
