At the centre of Latina, a 16.5-metre travertine stele rises from a shallow basin ringed by wheat sheaves — a war memorial that has watched the city grow around it since 1959. The park it anchors, five symmetrical hectares laid out in 1934 by Oriolo Frezzotti, reopened in July 2026 after a €5.5 million overhaul that stripped out 10,000 square metres of old asphalt and planted over a hundred new trees.
Named for the anti-Mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the park carries that dedication quietly. What you find on the ground is a well-structured green space: a butterfly area with educational programmes, outdoor fitness equipment, children's play structures with anti-trauma surfacing, and the tulip-shaped lamp posts that have become a small signature of the redesign.

The story behind Parco Falcone e Borsellino
Latina — built from scratch on reclaimed Pontine Marshes after the bonifica began in 1924 — needed a civic park almost as soon as it had streets. Oriolo Frezzotti, the architect responsible for much of the city's rational grid, designed the park in 1934, orientating its axis from Piazza del Popolo toward Terracina. The layout was symmetrical and deliberate, the surrounding streets radiating at precise 45-degree angles.
The Monumento ai Caduti di tutte le guerre, the travertine stele at the park's heart, was commissioned in 1959 — a later addition that gave the space its vertical anchor. Decades on, the park was dedicated to judges Falcone and Borsellino, the two magistrates killed in Sicily in 1992. The 2026 renovation, funded through Italy's PNRR recovery programme, preserved the historic pines while installing underground root barriers and a smart irrigation system beneath the new planting.

The park sits in Latina's city centre, walkable from the Palazzo della Provincia and Cattedrale di San Marco. Trains from Rome reach Latina Scalo (FR7 line), then a 24-minute bus ride into the centre for €1.40. Go between mid-April and mid-June, or September to early October, to avoid summer heat. Admission appears free.
Spring (mid-April to mid-June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the most comfortable conditions — warm without the 30°C August heat. Winter is mild and occasionally rainy, and the park stays green year-round; snow is exceptionally rare in Latina.
