Palazzo della Provincia di Latina
Stand in Piazza della Libertà and look up at the travertine pilasters rising in three registers above you — this is a building designed to announce something. Completed in 1934, the Palazzo della Provincia was conceived as the administrative heart of a brand-new city, Littoria, conjured from drained marshland only two years earlier. The facade carries Latin inscriptions about the draining of the Pontine Marshes, and a frieze by Francesco Barbieri runs across the central balcony, populated with allegorical figures: Ceres, Hygeia, Minerva.
Inside, the Sala Consiliare holds large tempera murals by Duilio Cambellotti depicting the reclamation of the Agro Pontino — workers in grey, land being wrestled from water. The building still functions as the seat of provincial government, so the exterior and its square do most of the public-facing work.

People who linger here tend to spend time reading the facade inscriptions before looking across at the monumental fountain Frezzotti also designed — the wheat ears carved in travertine are a quiet key to understanding what the whole ensemble was built to say. The surrounding trio of palazzo, bank and carabinieri barracks still reads as a coherent piece of urban theatre.
The story behind Palazzo della Provincia di Latina
Latina did not exist before 1932. When the Fascist government completed the drainage of the Pontine Marshes, it founded a series of new towns across the reclaimed land. Littoria — inaugurated 18 December 1932 — was the first and largest, and Roman architect Oriolo Frezzotti received the commission to draw up its master plan that same year.
By 1934 Frezzotti had completed the Palazzo del Governo, positioning it at the head of Piazza XXIII Marzo alongside a Bank of Italy branch and a Royal Carabinieri barracks — an ensemble built to project administrative authority over territory that had been marshland within living memory. The city was renamed Latina in 1945. Frezzotti went on to design two further new towns in the region, Pontinia and Sabaudia, making him the principal architectural voice of this particular moment of Italian land transformation.
Good to know
The building is an active government seat, so interior access is limited and unpredictable outside official events. The exterior and piazza are freely accessible at any time. Spring and early autumn give the most comfortable conditions for walking the square and reading the stonework at your own pace.
