Parco della Rimembranza
On the northern curve of Grosseto's old Medici walls, a bastion that once bristled with cannons now holds 139 trees — one for each soldier the city lost in the First World War. Holm oaks, cypresses and pines grow in eight converging beds, and if you look closely at the plaques, each tree still carries a name.
The park occupies the Bastione Rimembranza, the old Baluardo di San Francesco, where viale Manetti meets viale Porciatti. An obelisk by sculptors Luciani Ippolito and Luciani Giuseppe stands where a Garibaldi monument once did. The walls themselves form a walkable perimeter circuit, and this bastion is one of its quieter pauses.

People who walk the walls regularly tend to end up here at the northern point almost by default — it's where the promenade opens out and the tree cover thickens. The inscription on the obelisk rewards a close read. Come in the morning before the heat builds, and you'll mostly have it to yourself.
The story behind Parco della Rimembranza
The bastion itself dates to 1576–1577, built as part of the Medici reconstruction of Grosseto's city walls under a project by Baldassarre Lanci and directed by Simone Genga. It stood as a military fortification for centuries before the city found a different use for it.
In 1924, the municipal government cleared the existing trees and replanted the bastion with 139 holm oaks, cypresses and pines — one per fallen soldier — arranged in eight converging beds. The park was inaugurated on 6 November 1927. By May 1930, a Garibaldi monument that had stood here was moved to another bastion, replaced by the obelisk memorial. A requalification ceremony in May 2026 added 33 new trees to restore the original count to 139.

Free and open to the public, with no stated closing hours. Reach it via the pedestrian wall circuit from Porta Nuova. Spring (mid-April to mid-June) and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons. The circuit is flat and easy to walk in either direction.
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable times to visit — warm without the edge of July and August, when temperatures regularly exceed 35°C. Winter mornings on the walls can be sharp, with lows near freezing, though the midday light is often clear and the crowds thin to almost nothing.
