Palazzo Vistarino

The spiral staircase at Palazzo Bellisomi-Vistarino is the kind of thing that stops you mid-step — it corkscrews upward toward an octagonal turret, and from the street outside you can already see the top of it against the Pavia sky. Inside, Giovanni Angelo Borroni's frescoes run across ceilings that were designed not for ceremony alone but for music, reading, and conversation.

The palace sits near the Ticino River, and the belvedere and park behind it were conceived to keep that relationship alive — a deliberate framing of water and city from a private hilltop. After years of silence, a 2013 restoration returned it to use as the seat of the Alma Mater Ticinensis University Foundation.

💛 What travellers fall for

People who visit more than once tend to linger near Alessandro Mazzucotelli's iron gate before going in — his ironwork has a restless, organic quality that rewards a second look. The guided tours vary by event, so checking ahead with the foundation (fondazione@unipv.it) before you make the trip is genuinely worth the email.

The story behind Palazzo Vistarino

Gaetano Annibale Bellisomi, a Pavia aristocrat, commissioned the palace around 1720, with construction continuing in earnest from 1745. He died in 1747 before seeing it finished; his wife, Marie Anne Thérèse de la Corcelle Percy, saw the work through to completion in 1753. The architect was Francesco Croce, then among the most prominent figures in Milanese architecture, and the result stands as one of the more refined expressions of Lombard Rococo.

Bellisomi had also assembled an antiquarian museum with naturalistic collections that drew visitors from across Italy and beyond — an intellectual ambition that gave the house a life beyond its architecture. In the nineteenth century the Counts of Vistarino acquired the building and undertook substantial renovations. A restoration begun in 2007 and completed in 2013 brought it back into active use.
