For nearly half a century, between the demolition of Lodi's Teatro Sociale in 1939 and this theatre's opening in April 1985, the city had no major performance venue. The inaugural concert, given by the Cameristi della Scala under Gianandrea Gavazzeni, marked an end to that long pause.

The story behind Teatro alle Vigne
The site began as a chapel of San Giovanni e Ognissanti alle Vigne, built at the end of the thirteenth century for the Umiliati order. When Pope Pius V suppressed the Umiliati between 1570 and 1604, the property passed to the Barnabite Fathers, who commissioned architect Giovanni Ambrogio Mazenta to design a new church, consecrated in 1627.
The Barnabites ran a public high school here from 1631 until the Napoleonic period, when the building was deconsecrated and pressed into service as a grain storehouse. It later became a municipal gymnasium (from 1874), before the city began a serious renovation in 1976. The theatre opened in April 1985 under its first artistic director, Carlo Rivolta, and since 1987 has hosted the annual Fanfullino della riconoscenza, a ceremony honouring Lodi figures in the arts and professions.

The theatre is on Via Cavour 66, a short walk from central Lodi. The train station connects to Milan and Piacenza. Ticket office hours are Monday–Friday 5–7 PM; tickets are also sold at BCC Laudense Lodi branches. The season runs autumn through spring, covering theatre, music, dance, and family programming.

The Teatro alle Vigne is the main theater in the city of Lodi. However, it wasn't always a theater; originally, the building was the canonical church of San Giovanni e Ognissanti alle Vigne of the Order of the Humiliati. Over time, it housed a higher institute of theology, morality, and philosophy, a monastery, and a college. The original design is commonly attributed to the Barnabite architect Carlo Ambrogio Mazenta (Magenta, 1565-1635).
