Palazzo M
The name is literal. Palazzo M was designed in the shape of a capital letter — the initial of Mussolini — and if you step back far enough on Piazzale Araldo di Crollalanza, the building's footprint spells it out. Four stories of brick-faced rationalist architecture frame a travertine courtyard lined with giant-order pilasters, and a full-perimeter balcony runs the interior facades at upper level.
Today the building holds the Prefettura di Latina, the Questura, and the Guardia di Finanza. The tower that once crowned it was taken down in 1958, along with the eagle. What remains is the M.

People who know the building well tend to linger at the courtyard entrance rather than pushing further in — most of the interior is off-limits anyway. The travertine pilasters and the double-height upper level read best from that threshold. The two large statues flanking the main avenues, historically whitewashed and lit at night, are worth timing for after dark.
The story behind Palazzo M
Oriolo Frezzotti designed and oversaw construction of Palazzo M between 1938 and 1942, inaugurating it on 21 April 1943 as part of an ambitious Foro Littorio complex that was meant to include barracks and a central tower. The tower was never finished. Within months of opening, the fall of fascism rendered the building's political symbolism an embarrassment, and the intended programme collapsed with it.
The postwar years were improvised: the left wing sheltered displaced persons from the southern Pontine region, then passed to middle schools in 1954. A restoration completed in 1958 removed the tower and the eagle but kept the M-shaped plan intact. By 1992 the wings had been divided between the Guardia di Finanza and civil registry functions — the building now housing the Prefettura, the Questura, and the Guardia di Finanza, its rationalist bones still legible beneath a century of changed uses.

Latina is reachable from Rome on the FL7 or R train lines, with COTRAL buses connecting onward. The exterior and courtyard entrance are accessible year-round, but interior access is restricted — this is a working government building. The Cattedrale di San Marco is 180 metres northwest; the Museo civico is 220 metres north.
