Lago di Fogliano
A few kilometres from Latina, past an unpaved avenue of trees, a coastal lake opens up in a way that takes a moment to process — still water, grazing water buffalo on the verge, and the occasional pink flamingo moving through the shallows during migration season. The palm trees lining the shore once stood in for ancient Rome in the filming of Ben-Hur.
Lago di Fogliano sits inside the Circeo National Park, classified under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. Observation blinds along the Cicerchia marshes put you at eye level with grey herons, marsh harriers, and cormorants. The lake circuit is walkable or cyclable, and the whole thing is free to enter.

People who come back tend to arrive early on a summer morning, before the light flattens. The unpaved paths reward patience — the buffalo herds appear without warning, and the birdwatching blinds along the parallel ponds are worth sitting in for twenty minutes rather than walking past. The botanical garden at Borgo Fogliano requires a reservation but earns one.
The story behind Lago di Fogliano
The lake has been worked and watched over for a long time. Roman engineers built reclamation channels here for fishing and animal husbandry; in the medieval period the surrounding land passed to the Benedictine monks of Fossanova Abbey, who made use of its natural resources while malaria kept settlement sparse. In 1294, Pope Boniface VIII — Benedetto Caetani — granted the lake and the nearby Lago di Caprolace to his own family.
The Caetani held it for centuries, eventually building a hunting lodge in 1742 to receive the Count of Albany and the Cardinal Duke of York, nephews of James II of England. The manor house and Villa Inglese followed in 1877. At the end of the nineteenth century, Ada Bootle Wilbraham, wife of Onorato Caetani, laid out an exotic garden introducing palms and other non-native species; left largely untended from the 1920s, it naturalised into something stranger and more interesting than a formal garden. The whole estate became part of Circeo National Park in 1978.

Ten minutes by car from Latina city centre; the gate is open 07:00–17:00 in winter, until 20:00 in summer. Skip rainy days — the paths are unpaved throughout. Cyclists should note that some sections close July–September to protect nesting birds. The botanical garden charges €10 adults, €6 children, and requires advance booking.
Spring and autumn are the most rewarding seasons — temperatures are mild, the birds are active during migration, and the light on the water is less harsh. Summer visits are best kept to early morning or late afternoon; midday heat on the exposed paths is considerable. Avoid rainy periods, when the unpaved tracks become difficult.
