House of the Skeleton
The name comes from a man found where he fell — on an upper floor, unable to get out before the pyroclastic surge of October 79 AD sealed the building. That skeleton is no longer here, but the house still holds the weight of it.
What survives is a well-appointed domus that was once three separate properties, knocked through and merged into a single residence. The owner had resources: two courtyard spaces, frescoed garden scenes, a lararium faced in mosaic and marine shells, and a curved niche shimmering with glass paste tesserae. The entrance is paved in black and white mosaic, and an iron grate still clings to part of the roof.

People who pay attention to detail tend to linger at the second courtyard — the curved niche with its Dionysian panels repays a close look. Go at 8:30 when the site opens; the House of the Skeleton sits on the standard route, and by mid-morning the narrow passages fill up.
The story behind House of the Skeleton
Carlo Bonucci began digging here between 1830 and 1831. It was during those excavations, in 1831, that workers found the skeleton of a man on an upper floor — someone who had not made it to the shore before Vesuvius ended the town on 24 October, 79 AD. The house took his fate as its name.
Amedeo Maiuri returned to complete the excavation in 1927, and what emerged was a property that had grown by absorption: an owner had bought three adjacent houses and connected them, creating a mansion of unusual breadth for Insula III. Two lararia were found inside, both finely worked, suggesting a household that maintained its domestic rituals with some care.

One of the best-preserved houses in Herculaneum. Buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, it was excavated starting in 1830, revealing the first skeleton of the city, hence its name. The characteristic Roman construction method known as opus reticulatum is striking, where blocks of stone, some more polished than others, are laid on a bed of cement with their points facing downwards. In one of the courtyards, an original iron framework can be seen, which likely served as a grille to deter thieves.
During the excavation of 1831-33, a skeleton was found in a second-floor room. The current layout connects three houses. The entrance, on Cardo III, is paved with mosaic. At the rear are the atrium and tablinum. The central house has a covered atrium. To the left of the entrance wall is the nymphaeum, inlaid with limestone. Above the nymphaeum is a frieze composed of seven panels, of which only three remain. The lararium is located in the courtyard.
The "House of the Skeleton" in Herculaneum owes its name to the first skeleton found at the excavation site. It is one of the best-preserved houses in the city and offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of its ancient inhabitants. Particularly noteworthy are the well-preserved frescoes and the altar niche.
