House of the Deer (Casa dei Cervi)
Before Vesuvius buried it, the Casa dei Cervi sat at the seafront — a two-storey residence whose southern terrace looked straight out over the Bay of Naples. You can still read that ambition in the layout: the whole house is oriented toward the view, with a central axis running from the dining room through the garden to a gazebo on the panoramic terrace, every room arranged to pull you toward the water that is no longer there.
The house takes its name from two white Luna marble statues found in the garden — deer being brought down by hounds, rendered with a stillness that makes the violence feel ceremonial. The replicas stand today in their original positions.

People who come back tend to linger in the cryptoporticus: sixty fresco panels running along a black-and-white mosaic floor, painted with peaches, hens, lobsters, cupids — the kind of detail that takes a moment to register and then refuses to leave you. Go early, before tour groups compress the corridor.
The story behind House of the Deer (Casa dei Cervi)
The house was built during the reign of Claudius, sometime between 41 and 54 CE, and its fourth-style decoration — red and black grounds, architectural trompe-l'oeil, still-life panels — places the interior fit-out after 45 CE. The original owner is linked to Q. Granius Verus, a decurion and duovir of some standing in the town before 61 CE.
By the time Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE, the property appears to have passed to Celer, a freedman of Granius Verus — identified through a stamp on a carbonized loaf of bread found during excavations. The pyroclastic flows that killed the city also preserved its wooden galleries, balconies, and carbonized furniture in a way Pompeii's slower burial did not.
Good to know
Take the Circumvesuviana to Ercolano Scavi; the site entrance on Corso Resina is a short walk. The Casa dei Cervi can be temporarily closed for conservation, so check access on arrival. The site-wide ticket is €16, free on the first Sunday of the month.

Herculaneum is understated and beautiful. The staff are wonderful at the Park, 16Euro entry, whish I thought reasonable.
Using the audio guide and trying to match up things I'd previously learnt to the reality was wonderful. I was sad to see alot of modern graffiti.

One of the largest and most beautiful houses in Herculaneum. Some of the wall paintings are still well preserved. Several of the marble sculptures, including a hunting scene with deer and hounds after which the house is named, have been re-erected as copies in the garden.
