Grande Palestra
The scale of the Grande Palestra catches you off guard. You've walked the intimate rooms of houses and temples, and then you step through one of its ten monumental gateways into an open square roughly 140 by 140 metres — a space big enough to swallow a city block. Three sides are lined with a portico of 118 brick-and-stucco columns, and at the centre the ground still holds the outline of a large swimming pool. A small museum occupies the western veranda, reached from the northern end, and it repays a quiet quarter-hour.

People who come back tend to arrive later in the day, when the morning crowds have thinned toward the Forum end of the site. The evening summer openings — running from late June through July — let you see the colonnades in low light, which is a different experience entirely from the midday glare.
The story behind Grande Palestra
The Grande Palestra was built during the Augustan period, at the opening of the 1st century CE, as the city's principal space for gymnastics and athletics — the largest public ground in Pompeii reserved for young people. Its construction was tied to the imperial programme of founding collegia iuvenum, youth organisations whose stated purpose was athletic training and whose broader purpose was instilling loyalty to the new political order.
The earthquake of 62 CE damaged the complex. Repairs were underway but unfinished when Vesuvius buried the city in 79 CE, which means what you walk through today is a building caught mid-restoration — a detail that makes its sheer ambition all the more legible.

Covered by the standard Pompeii Express ticket (€20); book ahead online, as daily entry is capped at 20,000. The site runs 9am–7pm in summer, 9am–5pm in winter; closed 1 January and 25 December. Spring and autumn keep temperatures manageable for the long walks between sites.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons for a site with this much open ground — mild temperatures and manageable crowds. In July and August the courtyard offers almost no shade and midday heat regularly pushes past 32°C, so an early start or an evening visit matters here more than almost anywhere else in Pompeii.

Very nice place which served as training ground for gladiators. Has also nice items which were dug up during discovery of Pompeii.
This is place is so beautiful as it is reconstructed. There you will find cardonized seeds and food and jewels from the ancient times. Amazing place!
