Gavitella Beach
Gavitella sits at the bottom of several hundred steps cut into the cliff face above Praiano, west-facing and open to the horizon in a way that most Amalfi Coast beaches simply aren't. From the concrete platform beside the gravel shore, the view runs clear from Positano across to Punta Campanella, with the Li Galli islands and, on a clear day, Capri sitting offshore like punctuation.
The beach itself is small — around thirty metres of gravel flanked by rock — and privately managed, with sunbeds claimed early by those who know. A free strip of public shore exists if you want it. What draws people back is the light: the sun stays here until it actually sets, which is rarer than you'd think on this coast.
💛 What travellers fall for
Regulars tend to arrive by boat from Marina di Praia rather than negotiate the staircase in the heat of the day — the shuttle saves your legs for the walk back up. Book a table at La Gavitella restaurant if you want the free shuttle service and a sunbed that doesn't cost a hundred euros. Sunset from the concrete terrace, looking toward Capri, is the real reason people return.
The story behind Gavitella Beach
The name Gavitella is thought to trace back to dialect words for the mooring ropes — gàve — used by Praiano's fishermen to haul boats ashore in this sheltered cove. Through the era of the Amalfi Maritime Republic and long afterward, the inlet served as a working spot: nets mended, catches landed, boats dragged clear of the water.
That working life faded gradually as the coast's economy shifted toward tourism. La Gavitella restaurant and beach club opened here in 2004 as a family-run operation, anchoring the site's transition from fishing cove to the beach it is today. The Torre di Grado watchtower stands nearby, a remnant of the coastal defence network that once watched this same stretch of water.
Good to know
The beach club at La Gavitella (Via Gavitella 1) runs mid-May to early October, 9:30–19:00. Reach it via the long staircase from Praiano village, by boat from Marina di Praia, or via the restaurant's free shuttle for diners. SITA buses connect Praiano to Positano and Amalfi; buy tickets before boarding.
The beach faces west and holds sun all day through the summer months; July and August bring highs around 29°C with almost no rain, and the sea stays swimmable well into October. Spring visits from April onward offer gentler crowds and comfortable temperatures before the peak-season sunbed competition begins.

Absolutely incredible place! I spent the day here with my friend celebrating my birthday, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The experience started with the boat transfer from Positano, which was amazing by itself. Seeing Positano from the water was such a beautiful experience. The beach club has a wonderful atmosphere, comfortable sunbeds, crystal-clear water, and stunning views. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming throughout the day. After that, we had lunch at the restaurant. The portions were very generous, everything was delicious, and the view while dining was simply unforgettable. I would definitely love to come back one day. Highly recommended!
Our pasta-making experience at La Gavitella was nothing short of magical and became one of the absolute highlights of our Amalfi girls’ trip celebrating special birthdays. From the moment we arrived, everything was perfectly thought out. We were welcomed with delicious coffee and croissants overlooking the most breathtaking views imaginable. It is one of the most stunning settings we experienced in the Amalfi Coast. The atmosphere throughout was incredible: free-flowing Prosecco, music, laughter, dancing with friends, and such warm, genuine hospitality from the entire team. The pasta-making itself was so much fun, authentic, interactive, and beautifully organised. It felt far more than just a cooking class; it was a full experience and memory we’ll treasure forever. The attention to detail was exceptional, from the photos taken throughout the day to the certificates, aprons, recipe books, and gift bags we were given to take home. What truly made the experience extra special was the kindness of the owner, who even took us back by boat to Praiano marina afterwards, saving us the long climb back up the hill which was such a thoughtful touch that perfectly sums up the level of care and hospitality shown. And as if the day couldn’t get any more surreal, when we arrived back at the marina we bumped into Matthew McConaughey, who is currently filming the new Netflix movie Positano! It honestly felt like something out of a film itself. We genuinely cannot recommend this experience enough. Incredible value for money, unforgettable views, amazing people, fantastic food and drinks, and memories we’ll all talk about for years. If you’re visiting Praiano or the Amalfi Coast, this is an absolute must-do.
We spent the whole day here and absolutely loved it. The beach is beautiful, much quieter than the busy spots around Amalfi, and perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere. We swam, relaxed by the sea, and stayed for lunch - honestly, it was one of our favorite days on the Amalfi Coast. The food was excellent, especially the fresh seafood, and everything tasted even better with those incredible views. Great cocktails, delicious limoncello tiramisu, friendly service, and a truly special setting. If you’re looking for a place where you can spend an entire day by the sea, enjoy great food, and take a break from the tourist rush, this is the place.
Beautiful private beach with crystal-clear water and a very relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant was excellent- delicious food, friendly service, and stunning views. Everything was well maintained and felt exclusive without being pretentious. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful place to spend the day by the sea 💛
Me and my fiancé came here last night. The session lasted about 3 hours. We made pizza and gelatos. It was such an amazing evening with great value for money. It was run perfectly by the team and what a lovely bunch of people all the staff were! If we ever come again we’d 100% come back! Thank you x
