Belvedere di Pitigliano
Stand at the edge of Piazza della Repubblica and Pitigliano does something quietly arresting: the town simply ends, and the tuff cliff drops away beneath it, the stone buildings so continuous with the rock that the whole thing reads as one organism. This is the Belvedere — not a structure so much as a pause, a bench under a square-canopied tree, the right angle of open air.
The fountain at the centre of the square has stood here since 1545, its seven spouts each carved with an animal head, water running steadily into the basin. It's the kind of detail that earns the view rather than competes with it.

The story behind Belvedere di Pitigliano
The Belvedere has no founding date of its own — it exists because Pitigliano's builders simply ran out of land. The town occupies a narrow tuff plateau above two river gorges, and Piazza della Repubblica became the natural gathering point at its edge.
The fountain installed there in 1545 is the square's oldest fixed element. Water infrastructure was a persistent concern in this hilltop settlement, and the Medicean Aqueduct — built into the town walls by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger in the early seventeenth century — was the more ambitious answer to the same problem. The belvedere itself accumulated over centuries: benches, trees, a line of osterias, the view always the main event.

The Belvedere is open around the clock with no fee. Park on Via Marconi for free, or pay on Via San Michele. April through June and September through October offer the most comfortable temperatures. July and August can be oppressively hot at this elevation.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons — mild days, clear air, the landscape at its greenest or most golden. Summer afternoons can be intense even at 313 metres; if you visit in July or August, come to the viewpoint in the early morning or after dinner when the heat has lifted.

The best view on Pitigliano!
We visited in November, on a weekday, around 4 pm… and honestly, the village was completely deserted. Nothing was open, not a single shop, not a single terrace, not even a hint of atmosphere: a real movie set, but without the actors. We did manage to find one open bar, but judging by the crowd inside, we clearly weren't the only ones looking for shelter! On the other hand, seen from the outside and lit up at nightfall, the village is truly stunning. It has an incredible charm… which we hope to experience again inside another time, perhaps during the season!
Breathtaking scenery!!! The view from here is marvelous, a perfect spot to photograph a sunset like no other. I've often gone there just to read a book while enjoying the beautiful view, sitting comfortably on one of the benches under the trees.
A magnificent tuff stone civilization, a place steeped in history with local specialties. The Jewish Museum with its labyrinthine caves is highly recommended.
The Belvedere offers one of the most iconic views in Tuscany. From here, you can admire the village perched on the cliff, with the light changing with the hours of the day. At sunset, the warm, golden hues make the scenery simply enchanting. Breathtaking view! 6-star!
