Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta
Beneath a glass pavilion on Plaza de la Seo lies one of the best-preserved Roman forum complexes in Spain — a subterranean world of marble-clad porticoes, sewers and tabernae (shops) that once formed the civic heart of Caesaraugusta, the Roman city that gave Zaragoza its name. Most visitors walk right over it without knowing it exists.
Zaragoza's Roman secret
Founded by Emperor Augustus in 14 BC, Caesaraugusta was a major colonial city of around 25,000 inhabitants. The forum museum reveals the actual paving stones, column bases and drainage channels of the original public square — not reconstructions, but the genuine Roman fabric preserved beneath 2,000 years of city layers.
The visit is self-guided with an excellent audio system and takes about 45 minutes. Scale models and projections help you visualise the forum at its 1st-century AD peak, when it was flanked by a basilica, a temple and a macellum (covered market). The spatial scale is genuinely humbling.
Part of a four-museum Roman circuit
The Forum is one of four Roman museums in central Zaragoza — the others cover the River Port (Puerto Fluvial), the Public Baths (Termas Públicas) and the Theatre (Teatro Romano), all located within a 10-minute walk of each other. A combined ticket covers all four and is exceptional value for the depth of history on offer.
The Theatre museum, on Calle San Jorge, is particularly dramatic: you descend into the excavated cavea and orchestra of a 1st-century playhouse that seated 6,000 people, its stage wall partly reconstructed to full height. Together the four sites make Zaragoza one of Roman Spain's most rewarding cities — yet it remains largely off the international tourist radar.
