Mercado Central de Zaragoza
Housed in a swooping 1903 Modernista building just steps from the cathedral, Zaragoza's Mercado Central is the delicious, democratic heart of the city's food culture. Come hungry: this is where chefs, grandmothers and curious travellers all converge over the same impeccable produce.
A century of fresh produce
The cast-iron and glass structure was designed by Félix Navarro and feels like a cross between a Parisian arcade and a Valencian market hall. Over 200 stalls spread across two floors, selling everything from Ternasco de Aragón lamb and Cinco Villas asparagus to truffle-laced local cheeses and jamón de Teruel with its distinctive white-hoof black pigs.
Look for the melocotón de Calanda peaches in late summer — these DOP-protected, tissue-wrapped fruits are the pride of Aragonese horticulture and taste like nothing you will find in a supermarket. Vendors will happily let you taste before you buy.
Eating and drinking on site
Several stalls double as standing bars where you can order a glass of Cariñena wine and a pincho of local longaniza sausage for under €3. The atmosphere is convivial and unhurried — nobody rushes you, and the banter between stallholders is half the entertainment.
On Saturday mornings the market spills into the surrounding streets with a small farmers' extension, making it the best single morning you can spend in Zaragoza without leaving the city centre.
