Mercado Municipal de Abastos de Yecla

Yecla's covered municipal market is the real social hub of the town — a lively, entirely local affair where farmers from the surrounding huerta arrive before 8 am with crates of seasonal produce and the coffee bar in the corner does a roaring trade. This is where you shop like a Yeclano.

What to Buy and When

Spring brings fat white asparagus and tender artichokes from the irrigated plots east of town. Summer piles the stalls with peaches, apricots and the enormous flat tomatoes used in the local bread-and-oil breakfast known as pan con tomate a la murciana.

Autumn is arguably the best season: the nut vendors set out fresh almonds still in their fuzzy green hulls, the mushroom sellers appear with saffron milk caps foraged from nearby pine forests, and the first pressed olive oil arrives in unlabelled bottles that locals buy by the litre.

The Charcutería and Cheese Corner

A cluster of stalls at the market's east end specialise in Murcian cured meats — particularly the paprika-dusted longaniza sausage and thin-sliced lomo en manteca (pork loin preserved in lard) that make extraordinary bocadillo fillings for a picnic on the castle hill.

Ask the cheese stall for local Murcia al Vino, the striking purple-rinded fresh cheese washed in Monastrell wine — it pairs perfectly with a bottle picked up at the Museo del Vino shop around the corner.
