Basílica de la Purísima Concepción
Rising improbably from Yecla's flat skyline, this colossal 16th-to-18th-century basilica is one of the largest parish churches in the entire Region of Murcia — its twin-towered facade visible from the surrounding vineyards kilometres away. Step inside and the scale becomes even more astonishing.
Stone, Scale and Sacred Art
Construction stretched across three centuries, which means the interior layers Gothic structural bones under Baroque decorative ambition — ribbed vaulting soaring overhead while gilded altarpieces compete for attention below.
The main altarpiece dedicated to the Purísima Concepción is the centrepiece: a cascade of carved polychrome wood that took local craftsmen decades to complete. Look closely at the side chapels for paintings attributed to the circle of Francisco Salzillo, Murcia's master Baroque sculptor.
Climbing the Bell Tower
A narrow staircase winds to the top of the north tower, rewarding the climb with a panorama that sweeps across the town's terracotta rooftops to the Sierra del Serral and, on clear days, all the way to the salt flats near Villena.
The tower is only accessible on guided visits organised through the parish office — worth booking a day ahead, especially in summer when slots fill quickly with visiting school groups.
