Pulpería A Cantina
No visit to Galicia is complete without pulpo á feira — boiled octopus dressed with olive oil, coarse salt and smoked paprika, served on a wooden board — and A Cantina in Viveiro's old town is one of the most honest places in the Mariña Lucense to eat it. The dining room is unfussy, the portions are generous and the wine list is a short, well-chosen tour of Galician whites.
What to Order
Start with the pulpo á feira (half-ración is plenty for one person) and a cold glass of Ribeiro or Albariño. The octopus is boiled in copper pots in the traditional manner, giving it a tender but slightly firm bite and a clean oceanic flavour that the paprika lifts beautifully.
Follow with whatever the daily fish special is — in Viveiro this is invariably something landed within the last 24 hours. Grilled sardines in summer, merluza á gallega (hake with potatoes and olive oil) in cooler months.
The Galician Table
Meals here follow the unhurried Galician rhythm: bread arrives first, conversation is expected to outlast the dessert, and the house orujo (pomace brandy) is offered at the end as a matter of cultural obligation rather than upselling.
A Cantina is popular with locals at lunch, which is the best endorsement possible. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday afternoons, when the dining room fills quickly.
