Murallas Medievales de Viveiro
Viveiro is one of the few Galician towns that still wears its medieval skin proudly, with three original stone gateways — Porta de Carlos V, Porta do Valado and Porta da Vila — standing sentinel over the old town. Strolling the surviving wall circuit at golden hour, when the granite glows amber, is the single most atmospheric thing you can do in the city.
The Three Gates
The grandest of the trio is the Porta de Carlos V, a Renaissance triumphal arch built in 1548 to honour the emperor's visit. Its carved imperial crest is crisp enough to photograph in sharp detail even today.
The humbler Porta do Valado and Porta da Vila flank the old quarter on the river and market sides respectively, framing cobblestone lanes that have changed little in five centuries.
Walking the Circuit
A leisurely loop connecting all three gates takes under 30 minutes and passes the Igrexa de Santa María do Campo, a Romanesque-Gothic church whose facade rivals anything in Santiago de Compostela at a fraction of the crowds.
Look down at the pavement as you walk — the old town's streets are paved with flat river stones set in herringbone patterns, a detail most visitors rush past without noticing.
