Mirador de San Roque
Perched on the hillside above Viveiro, the Mirador de San Roque delivers a sweeping 180-degree panorama over the Ría de Viveiro, the town's terracotta rooftops and the pine-clad mountains of the Serra do Xistral rolling into the distance. It is the kind of view that makes you reach for your camera before you have even stopped walking.
The View Itself
On clear mornings the estuary below shimmers like hammered silver, with mussel-farming rafts — the iconic bateas of Galicia — floating in geometric rows across the water. In summer, the green hills behind town are so vivid they look painted.
The small chapel of San Roque beside the viewpoint adds a quintessentially Galician foreground element: weathered stone, a simple iron cross and a carpet of wildflowers in spring.
Getting Up There
From the old town it is a 15-minute uphill walk via Rúa San Roque — steep but manageable, and the lane is shaded by eucalyptus and oak. Alternatively, you can drive and park in a small lay-by just below the mirador.
The viewpoint is at its best in the late afternoon when the light rakes across the ría from the west, turning the water gold and the town's granite walls to honey.
