Église Saint-Laurent de Heiltz-le-Maurupt
Seventeen kilometres north of Vitry-le-François on the D995, the tiny village of Heiltz-le-Maurupt hides one of the most startling Romanesque churches in the Marne — a 12th-century structure with original painted vaulting that was only fully uncovered during a restoration in the 1980s. Almost nobody comes here, which makes it all the more extraordinary.
The Frescoes That Time Forgot
The interior walls and barrel vault carry fragmentary but vivid 12th-century frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and a series of saints rendered in the flat, wide-eyed Romanesque style that predates Gothic naturalism by a century. The ochres, terre verte and lapis-derived blues have survived remarkably well, sheltered for centuries under layers of whitewash applied during the Wars of Religion.
The apse fresco — a Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four Evangelists' symbols — is the centrepiece and genuinely comparable in quality to the better-known examples at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe. Stand in the centre of the nave and the entire painted programme reveals itself in one sweeping glance.
Getting There and the Village Around It
Heiltz-le-Maurupt has a population of around 200 and the church is its only monument, but the drive north from Vitry through the open Champagne crayeuse landscape — vast wheat fields, isolated copses and the occasional chalk track leading to a farm — is itself a reason to make the trip. Pack a picnic from the Vitry market and stop at one of the roadside picnic tables near the Étang de la Forêt, a small woodland lake 2 kilometres before the village.
The church is usually unlocked during daylight hours; if it is locked, a notice on the door gives the number of the key-holder in the village. The tourist office in Vitry can also arrange access in advance and sometimes organises guided visits combining Heiltz-le-Maurupt with two other Romanesque churches in the Perthois on summer Saturday mornings.
