Canal de la Marne au Rhin — Écluse de Vitry
The Canal de la Marne au Rhin threads through Vitry-le-François in a dead-straight line, and the town's central lock — the Écluse de Vitry — is the perfect place to watch the unhurried drama of canal life unfold. Barges, houseboats and hire cruisers queue politely while the lock keeper works the sluices, all reflected in water the colour of old pewter.
The Best Vantage Points
The lock sits just south of the town centre, accessible on foot via the Quai des Fontaines in about ten minutes from Place d'Armes. The stone bridge immediately downstream of the lock gives the classic elevated view — barge rooftops, the church tower in the background and the long vanishing-point perspective of the canal stretching east toward the Argonne forest.
Early morning is best, when mist sits on the water and the light is golden. Bring a coffee from the nearby Boulangerie Thierry on Rue de la Marne and settle on the lock-side bench; the lock keeper usually arrives around 07:00 and the first barge of the day is a reliable photo opportunity.
Walking the Towpath
The towpath north of the lock is a pleasant 3-kilometre flat walk to the junction with the Canal latéral à la Marne, where the two canals meet in a Y-shaped basin that is unique in the French waterway network. This confluence, known locally as the Jonction, is marked by a small stone monument and offers wide views across the Champagne plain in three directions.
The towpath is open to cyclists as well as walkers and connects to the EuroVelo 19 — the Meuse Cycle Route — making Vitry a genuine stop on a long-distance cycling journey from the North Sea to the Mediterranean.
