Pfitschtal (Val di Vizze) Valley Walk
Just 8 kilometres east of Vipiteno, the Pfitschtal is one of the least-touristed side valleys in the entire South Tyrol — a deep glacially carved corridor of spruce forest, rushing meltwater streams and traditional Tyrolean farmsteads that feels a world away from the busier resort valleys. The Trail and What You Will See
The easiest section runs from the village of Wiesen (Prati) to the hamlet of St. Jakob (San Giacomo), a flat 6-kilometre stretch suitable for families and accessible to mountain bikes. The path crosses the river on wooden footbridges several times and passes beneath the dramatic Hochfeilerspitze (3,510 m), the highest peak in the Zillertal Alps, whose glacier is visible from the valley floor on clear days.
In late May and June, the meadows around the valley farmsteads are thick with Alpine wildflowers — yellow arnica, purple cranesbill and the protected Martagon lily. The valley has no large hotels or ski infrastructure, so the only sounds are cowbells, the river and occasional birdsong.
Pfitscherjoch Haus and the High Route
Strong walkers can continue all the way to the Pfitscherjoch Haus mountain refuge at 2,275 metres, a classic Austrian-Italian border hut that serves Gulasch, Kaiserschmarrn and cold Radler on a terrace overlooking a glacial cirque. The full ascent from Wiesen is about 18 km and 1,200 metres of elevation gain — a serious but non-technical day hike best done in July or August when the upper valley is snow-free.
The hut sits directly on the Alta Via di Vipiteno long-distance trail and is a popular overnight stop for walkers crossing from the Zillertal in Austria — you will meet a genuinely international crowd of mountain enthusiasts here.
