The Gondola Ride and Summit Experience
The Rosskopf gondola departs from a base station just a 10-minute walk from the old town centre and climbs through dense spruce forest before breaking out into open alpine meadows near the top. At the summit, the panoramic restaurant Gipfelrestaurant Rosskopf serves South Tyrolean Brettljause (a cold-cut and cheese board) and locally brewed beer on a sun terrace where the views are simply outrageous.
In summer the summit is the starting point for a network of well-marked hiking trails across the Pfitscherjoch plateau; in winter it transforms into a family ski area with 40 km of pistes and a well-regarded snow park.
Sunrise and Photography Tips
The east-facing summit catches the first light beautifully, painting the Dolomite limestone towers in shades of amber and rose during the so-called Enrosadira phenomenon. Serious photographers should take the first gondola of the day (usually 9:00 in summer) and position themselves on the south-facing viewing terrace for the clearest shot of the valley below.
On clear days in late autumn, before the ski season begins, you can often have the summit almost entirely to yourself — a rare luxury for a viewpoint this dramatic and this easy to reach.
