Climbing to the top of the Vincennes keep delivers one of the most underrated panoramas in the entire Paris region — a 360-degree sweep that takes in the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Cœur, the La Défense skyline and the endless green carpet of the Bois de Vincennes all at once, with none of the queues you'd endure at the Eiffel Tower itself.
The View From the Top
On a clear winter morning, when the air is crisp and the leaves are off the trees, you can identify landmarks from Montmartre in the northwest to the Orly airport control tower in the south. The perspective from a genuine medieval battlement — arrow slits, worn stone underfoot, iron handrails added with minimal fuss — makes it feel far more adventurous than any purpose-built observation deck.
The climb involves 180 narrow spiral steps, so wear flat shoes and take it at your own pace. The intermediate floors, each with their own window embrasures, offer progressively expanding views worth pausing for.
Best Times for Photography
Late afternoon in autumn is the golden hour here — the low sun lights up the honey-coloured stone of the castle walls and the Bois turns amber and red below. Bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone's panorama mode to capture the full sweep.
On Bastille Day (14 July), the terrace offers a grandstand view of the fireworks over eastern Paris, though you'll need to book your keep ticket well in advance as spots are extremely limited.
