Théâtre du Soleil and Its Siblings
Founded in 1964, the Théâtre du Soleil is the anchor company and the reason theatre-lovers make pilgrimages from across the world. Mnouchkine's productions — often epic in scale, blending Western and Asian theatrical traditions — can run four to five hours and are performed in a vast hangar-like space where the audience sits on moveable bleachers arranged around or beside the stage.
The Cartoucherie also houses the Théâtre de l'Aquarium, the Théâtre de la Tempête, the Théâtre de l'Épée de Bois and the Théâtre du Chaudron — each with its own programming and aesthetic. On nights when multiple companies are performing simultaneously, the forest paths between the buildings hum with an almost festival-like energy.
The Pre-Show Ritual
One of the great pleasures of a Théâtre du Soleil evening is the pre-show meal: the company's actors and crew cook and serve a communal dinner in the foyer before the performance, a tradition that has continued for decades. It is deliberately simple — soup, salad, roast chicken — but eating with the cast in the candlelit entrance hall is an experience that blurs the line between theatre and life in the most wonderful way.
Getting here is part of the adventure: take Métro line 1 to Château de Vincennes, then bus 112 to the Cartoucherie stop, or walk 25 minutes through the forest. The approach through the trees at dusk, following handmade signs nailed to oaks, is itself a kind of theatrical prologue.
