Reserva Natural Parcial de la Ría de Villaviciosa
The estuary of the Ría de Villaviciosa is one of the most important wetland habitats on the Cantabrian coast, protected as a Partial Nature Reserve and a key staging post for thousands of wading birds and wildfowl on the Atlantic flyway. You can walk its banks for free, any day of the year.
Birdwatching on the Ría
The mudflats exposed at low tide attract spoonbills, little egrets, grey herons, and in autumn a parade of migrating sandpipers, dunlin, and black-tailed godwits. Winter brings flocks of wigeon and teal that dot the water like scattered punctuation.
The best vantage point for birdwatching is the wooden hide near El Puntal sandbar at the river mouth — reach it via the flat path that runs along the southern bank from the bridge on the N-632. Binoculars are essential; a 300 mm lens will keep you busy for hours.
Walking the Estuary Path
A well-maintained trail follows the southern shore of the ría from the edge of town all the way to the beach at El Puntal, covering about 4 km each way on almost completely flat ground. The path passes through reed beds, salt marsh, and riverside meadow — a genuinely varied walk for such a short distance.
At El Puntal the ría meets the Cantabrian Sea in a dramatic narrow channel, and the beach itself is a fine arc of clean sand backed by dunes. Swimming is possible but currents at the channel mouth are strong — stay on the ocean-facing side of the bar.
