Mercado Semanal de Villaviciosa
Every Tuesday morning the streets around Plaza del Ayuntamiento fill with stalls selling everything from freshly dug potatoes and wheels of Asturian cheese to hand-stitched linen and live poultry — a proper country market that has operated on this site for centuries and still draws farmers from the surrounding valleys.
What to Buy and Where to Look
The food stalls are the heart of the market. Look for queso de Afuega'l Pitu (a sharp, crumbly local cheese sometimes rolled in paprika), jars of wild honey from the Sueve mountains, and bottles of artisan cider from small-batch producers who never make it to supermarket shelves.
Seasonal produce shifts dramatically through the year: asparagus and peas in spring, tomatoes and peppers in late summer, enormous heads of cabbage and dried beans through winter. Whatever is piled highest is what local cooks are using that week.
Beyond the Food
The non-food section sprawls along Calle Agua and sells everything a rural Asturian household might need — rubber boots, rope, garden tools, wool blankets, and embroidered tablecloths. It is wonderfully un-touristy.
Grab a coffee and a fresh churro from the mobile van that parks beside the church of Santa María de la Oliva and watch the town conduct its weekly social ritual — this is where gossip, news, and recipes are exchanged in equal measure.
