Mirador del Picu La Llomba
A short drive or steep 40-minute hike above town brings you to this panoramic hilltop where the estuary of the Ría de Villaviciosa unfolds below like a brushstroke of silver, framed by apple orchards and the dark green of eucalyptus forest running to the Cantabrian Sea.
The View That Explains the Town
From La Llomba you can read Villaviciosa's entire geography at a glance: the medieval core clustered around Santa María de la Oliva, the flat estuary floodplain patchworked with orchards, the sandbar at El Puntal where the ría meets the sea, and on clear days the limestone peaks of the Picos de Europa floating on the eastern horizon.
The viewpoint has a small stone wall to lean against and enough space to set up a tripod without crowding — arrive at golden hour for colours that border on the theatrical.
Getting Up and Coming Down
The most direct walking route starts from the Calle del Picu on the north side of town and climbs through mixed woodland for about 2 km. The path is well-worn but uneven — wear trail shoes rather than sandals.
Alternatively, drive up the narrow lane signposted 'La Llomba' from the N-632 roundabout north of town; parking for four or five cars at the top. Combine the visit with a walk along the ría shore on the way back for a half-day loop.
