Wandering the Caruggi
The narrow covered alleyways known locally as caruggi connect Raito's terraced levels in a logic that only makes sense once you've walked them twice. Start at the small Piazza Municipio and follow Via Raito uphill, ducking into any staircase lane that catches your eye — you cannot truly get lost as the hillside always guides you back to a view of the sea.
Look for the 12th-century Torre Normanna, a squat defensive tower that once guarded this stretch of coast against Saracen raids; it now stands beside a private home but is visible and photographable from the lane below.
Villa Guariglia and Its Gardens
Villa Guariglia was built in the early 18th century by the noble Guariglia family and donated to the Campania region in the 1970s. Its terraced garden descends in a series of clipped hedges, citrus groves and rose beds toward a belvedere with a direct view over the gulf — entry to the garden is free and it is almost always uncrowded.
The MuSA ceramic museum inside the villa (€5, Tue–Sun 09:00–19:00) is compact but beautifully curated, with particular strength in the German Bauhaus-influenced Vietrese pieces from the 1930s that defined the town's modern ceramic identity.
Where to Eat in Raito
Ristorante Zi' Ntonio in Raito has been feeding locals since the 1950s with a menu anchored in Campanian coastal cooking: pasta al forno, baccalà alla napoletana, and a dessert trolley that includes a textbook sfogliatella riccia. The terrace looks directly over the gulf and the wine list focuses on Campanian DOC bottles at fair prices.
For something more casual, the alimentari on Via Raito assembles made-to-order panini with local salumi and provola affumicata cheese — ideal provisions for a picnic in the Villa Guariglia gardens.
