Marina di Vietri & the Fishermen's Pier
While the rest of the Amalfi Coast draws crowds to its pastel-painted harbours, Vietri sul Mare's working marina at the eastern end of the beach retains a completely unself-conscious fishing-village character — wooden gozzo boats are hauled up on rollers before dawn, nets spread across the quay for mending, and the day's catch is sold directly off the boats to locals who arrive with their own cont
The Morning Ritual
Arrive at the pier between 06:00 and 07:30 to watch the fleet return from overnight anchovy and squid fishing. The fishermen are generally welcoming of quiet observers and will often hold up particularly spectacular catches for photographs if you show genuine interest rather than just pointing a phone.
The small covered fish market adjacent to the pier opens around 07:00 and sells the morning's catch at prices dramatically lower than any restaurant — whole fresh anchovies, totani, and seasonal pesce azzurro (blue fish) like mackerel and sardines are the staples.
The Beach Below the Ceramic Town
Marina di Vietri's beach is a genuine mixed-use strand: one half is taken by stabilimenti (paid lido areas with sun beds and umbrellas, roughly €15 per day for two beds and an umbrella), while the other end remains free public beach with direct access from the promenade.
The water quality here is excellent — the beach holds a Bandiera Blu (Blue Flag) classification — and the seabed drops off quickly enough for good snorkelling around the rocky outcrops at the eastern end. Bring your own mask and fins as rental is inconsistent.
Aperitivo on the Lungomare
The Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, Vietri's seafront promenade, is lined with unpretentious bars where locals gather for aperitivo from around 18:30. Order a Campari spritz or a glass of local Aglianico and watch the light change on the water — the promenade faces almost due west and delivers spectacular sunsets with the silhouette of Salerno's port cranes providing an unexpectedly industrial drama on the horizon.
Bar Nettuno at the western end of the lungomare is the oldest and most atmospheric, with original 1960s fittings, strong espresso and a bruschetta topped with fresh local tomatoes and anchovy that costs under €3.
