Vieste Vecchia (Old Town)
Perched on a narrow promontory jutting into the Adriatic, Vieste's medieval old town is a dense maze of whitewashed alleys, sun-bleached archways and terracotta pots spilling with bougainvillea. It is one of the best-preserved historic centres on the entire Gargano peninsula, compact enough to wander without a map yet rich enough to fill a half-day.
Wandering the Chianca Amara
At the tip of the old town stands a large flat limestone rock known as the Chianca Amara — the 'bitter stone' — where, according to historical accounts, thousands of inhabitants were executed during the Ottoman raid of 1554 led by Dragut. A simple plaque marks the spot; the view from here across the sea is simultaneously beautiful and sobering.
Nearby, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dates to the 11th century and was built over an earlier Byzantine church. Its plain Romanesque façade gives way to a cool, dark interior housing a revered statue of the Madonna di Merino, patron of the town.
Shops, Ceramics and Aperitivo
The main pedestrian artery, Via Duomo, is lined with small ceramics studios selling hand-painted Gargano-style plates, plus a handful of alimentari where you can pick up local olive oil, dried figs and caciocavallo cheese for a picnic. Prices are noticeably lower here than in the resort shops along the seafront.
As the afternoon cools, locals gather on the small piazzas for aperitivo — order a Primitivo di Manduria or a Peroni with taralli and watch the light turn the white walls amber. The bar on Piazza Seggio is a reliable spot with outdoor tables right on the edge of the cliff.
