Mercato Settimanale di Vieste
Every Tuesday morning the weekly street market spills along the roads near the sports ground on the edge of Vieste's modern town, drawing farmers, fishmongers and vendors from across the Gargano peninsula. It is the most authentic slice of everyday Pugliese life you'll find in a resort town that can otherwise feel heavily tourist-facing in summer.
What to Buy
The food stalls are the main draw: look for locally produced Gargano citrus (the IGP-protected Gargano orange and citron are extraordinary), fresh ricotta sold by weight from plastic tubs, sun-dried tomatoes packed in olive oil, and fat green Bella di Cerignola olives. A wedge of aged caciocavallo podolico — made from the milk of semi-wild Podolica cattle that roam the Gargano — is worth every cent and travels well vacuum-packed.
Alongside food you'll find stalls selling cheap linen shirts, beach towels, ceramics, wicker baskets and household goods. Prices are considerably lower than the boutiques in the old town, and a little friendly bargaining on non-food items is accepted.
Practical Tips for Market Morning
The market runs from around 07:30 until 13:00; the freshest produce and the best selection of fish are gone by 09:30, so an early start pays off. Bring a reusable bag and small cash — most vendors don't take cards.
After shopping, the cafés on the nearby Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II are perfect for a post-market espresso and a sfogliatella or a pasticciotto leccese. It's a genuinely local ritual that hasn't been polished for tourists.
