Ermita de la Trinidad & Pilgrim Fountain
Half a kilometre east of Viana's old town walls, tucked beside the Camino de Santiago path, the tiny Ermita de la Trinidad is a Romanesque chapel so modest it barely registers on tourist maps — yet it has welcomed pilgrims since the 12th century and retains an atmosphere of genuine, unpolished antiquity.
The chapel itself
The ermita is a single-nave Romanesque structure with a rounded apse and simple stone cross. It is rarely locked during daylight hours and the interior, just a few metres deep, holds a painted wooden retablo and a row of votive candles left by passing pilgrims. The smell of old stone and candlewax is oddly moving.
The exterior walls are built from the same honey-coloured limestone as the main church in town, but here there is no ornamentation — just clean, ancient masonry and a small bell mounted in a wall arch. It photographs beautifully against a blue sky with the Rioja hills in the background.
The pilgrim fountain
Beside the ermita stands a stone fountain that has provided water to Camino pilgrims for centuries. It still flows with cold, clean water and is a legitimate rest stop on the route. On busy summer mornings you can watch dozens of pilgrims filling their water bottles, adjusting their boots and comparing blisters — a timeless scene unchanged in its essentials for 800 years.
The surrounding area is shaded by old oak trees and there are rough stone benches where you can sit and watch the Camino traffic without being part of it. It is one of those quiet, overlooked spots that stays with you long after the famous monuments have blurred together.
How to reach it
From the Puerta de Castilla in Viana, follow the yellow Camino de Santiago arrows eastward out of town. The ermita appears on the left after about 10 minutes of easy walking on a flat, well-maintained path. The round trip from the town centre takes under 30 minutes.
There are no facilities, no entry fee and no opening hours — it is simply there, as it has been for centuries, doing its quiet job.
