Lake Como Ferry Hop to Bellagio
The slow car ferry that departs from Varenna's dock and crosses to Bellagio and Menaggio in a triangular route is not just transport — it is one of the great cheap thrills of Italian travel, a 15-minute crossing that gives you the full cinematic sweep of the lake's central basin with the Alps as a backdrop. The Crossing
The ferry is operated by Navigazione Lago di Como and runs year-round, roughly every 30 minutes during the day; the Varenna–Bellagio leg takes about 15 minutes and costs under €5 per person.
From the open stern deck you get an unobstructed view back to Varenna's pastel waterfront and up to Castello di Vezio on its crag — the classic postcard shot, and it is free once you have paid your fare.
Bellagio for the Afternoon
Bellagio is worth two to three hours: walk the stepped lanes of Salita Serbelloni, browse the silk shops on Via Garibaldi, and have an Aperol spritz on the terrace of one of the bars overlooking the ferry dock before catching the boat back.
The last ferry back to Varenna runs late into the evening in summer, so there is no need to rush — check the Navigazione Lago di Como timetable posted at the dock or on their website before you go.
