Castello di Vezio
Perched 375 metres above Varenna on a rocky spur, the 11th-century Castello di Vezio delivers the most theatrical panorama on the entire lake — a 360-degree sweep taking in the Lecco branch, the Bellagio headland, and the snow-dusted Alps on clear days. The steep 20-minute hike up through olive groves is every bit as rewarding as the destination.
The Climb and the Castle
The trail begins at the top of Varenna's old town and winds through terraced gardens and dry-stone walls; wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially in summer.
The castle itself is compact but evocative — a single Norman tower, a small courtyard, and resident falcons and owls that the owners fly in free-flight demonstrations on weekend afternoons.
Views Worth Every Step
From the battlements you can pick out Bellagio's promontory, the white facade of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, and the ferry criss-crossing below like a slow-moving toy.
Sunset visits are magical: the western light turns the lake copper and the mountains behind Menaggio go violet — bring a wide-angle lens and arrive 30 minutes before golden hour.
