Vannes Medieval Ramparts & Wash-Houses
Vannes owns one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in all of Brittany, a near-complete circuit of granite towers and curtain walls that you can stroll along for free. The secret flourish? Cascading flower gardens tumbling down to the photogenic 15th-century wash-houses (lavoirs) reflected in the still moat below.
The Rampart Walk
Start at the Porte Saint-Vincent on Place Gambetta and follow the walls clockwise past the Tour du Connétable and the Château Gaillard. The full circuit takes about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace and rewards you with constantly changing angles over the old town rooftops.
The section between the Porte Poterne and the Tour du Bourreau is the most dramatic — thick granite walls drop sharply into the moat garden, and in summer the flower beds are an explosion of geraniums and begonias tended by the city's award-winning gardeners.
The Lavoirs & Moat Gardens
Tucked at the base of the walls near the Porte Poterne, the 15th-century lavoirs are among the most photographed corners of Brittany. The low stone roofed structures sit right on the water, and on calm mornings the ramparts mirror perfectly in the moat — arrive before 9 am to beat the tour groups.
The surrounding Jardins des Remparts are free to enter and make an ideal picnic spot. Grab a kouign-amann from a nearby bakery and settle in for one of the most classically Breton views you'll find anywhere.
