Marché de la Place du Poids Public
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the streets around the covered market hall near Place du Poids Public fill with one of the Gulf of Morbihan's best food markets — stalls piled with Breton butter, Cancale oysters, andouille sausage and strawberries from Plougastel. This is where Vannes locals actually shop.
What to Buy
The Saturday market is the larger of the two and spreads well beyond the covered hall into the surrounding streets. Priorities include the salted butter from local dairy farms (ask for beurre demi-sel de baratte), buckwheat flour for making your own galettes at home, and whatever shellfish looks liveliest — the oyster sellers often shuck to order on the spot.
Look out for stalls selling kouign-amann, far breton (a dense prune custard cake) and crêpes dentelle, the paper-thin lacey biscuits from Quimper that make brilliant edible souvenirs. Prices are noticeably lower here than in tourist-facing crêperies.
The Covered Hall & Surroundings
The 19th-century covered market hall itself is worth a look for its iron and glass architecture, which has been lovingly maintained. Inside you'll find permanent butchers, fishmongers and cheese vendors who trade six days a week — a good option if you're self-catering and miss the outdoor market days.
After shopping, the cafés on nearby Place de la République are the local choice for a post-market coffee and tartine. Settle in around 11 am and watch the crates being packed away — it's a very Breton kind of theatre.
