Réserve Naturelle des Aiguilles Rouges

Draped across the ridge directly opposite Mont Blanc, the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve is one of the most accessible yet genuinely wild corners of the French Alps. Granite towers stained rust-red by iron oxide glow at golden hour while chamois pick their way across snowfields just metres from the trail.

What to Expect on the Ground

The reserve covers 3,300 hectares of high-altitude terrain between 1,200 m and 2,965 m, protecting golden eagles, ptarmigan, and alpine marmots alongside rare flora like the Martagon lily and purple saxifrage.

The most rewarding entry point from Vallorcine is the Col des Montets (1,461 m), right on the N506, where a small visitor centre run by Asters explains the ecosystem before you even lace your boots.

From the col, the trail to Lac Blanc (2,352 m) climbs steadily through dwarf pine and boulder fields, rewarding you with a mirror-still lake framing the entire Mont Blanc massif — arguably the finest panorama in the Alps.

Planning Your Visit

The reserve is free to enter and open year-round, but the Lac Blanc trail is best walked from late June to mid-October when snow has cleared enough to make the rocky path safe without crampons.

A télécabine from La Flégère (reachable by bus from Vallorcine) can shorten the ascent significantly if you prefer to spend your energy on the ridgeline rather than the approach.

Carry at least two litres of water — there are no refreshment stands inside the reserve, and afternoon thunderstorms build quickly in July and August, so an early start before 08:00 is strongly advised.
