The cheese stall run by a family from the Vallée de l'Arve brings wheels of Beaufort d'alpage — the summer-pasture version made when cows graze above 1,500 m — alongside fresh tomme and a sharp, crumbly aged Abondance that pairs perfectly with the local sourdough sold two stalls along.
Honey is a quiet speciality of the valley: look for the beekeeper from Le Couteray hamlet who produces a dark, resinous fir honeydew (miellat de sapin) harvested from hives placed in the larch forest above the village — it tastes like the forest smells after rain.
In August, small-scale growers appear with baskets of wild bilberries, alpine strawberries, and occasionally chanterelle mushrooms gathered that morning from the slopes above Vallorcine — buy whatever is there because it won't be next week.
Timing and Tips
The market runs from approximately 08:30 to 12:30; arrive before 10:00 if you want the best selection of cheese and charcuterie, which tends to sell out as day-trippers arrive from Chamonix on the Mont Blanc Express around mid-morning.
Bring cash — most stalls accept euros only and there is no ATM in the market square itself (the nearest is inside the Vallorcine post office on Route du Village, a two-minute walk away).
The market is small enough to browse in 30 minutes but rewarding enough to linger over for two hours if you let conversations with producers unfold at their natural pace — ask the cheesemakers about the difference between alpage and valley-floor production and you'll learn more about Savoie food culture than any guidebook can tell you.
