Chapelle Saint-Grat and the Old Village Core
While hikers funnel toward Lac Blanc and skiers queue for the Vallorcine chairlift, almost nobody pauses to explore the cluster of 17th-century stone granaries and the tiny Chapelle Saint-Grat that form the oldest part of the village. This ten-minute detour rewards you with carved wooden lintels, a painted baroque altarpiece, and the feeling that the 21st century simply hasn't arrived yet.
The Chapel and Its History
The Chapelle Saint-Grat dates to 1699 and was built by the villagers of Vallorcine as a votive offering after an avalanche spared the hamlet — a reminder that life in this valley has always been negotiated with the mountain rather than imposed upon it.
Inside, a gilded altarpiece depicts Saint Grat, the patron saint of the Aosta Valley, flanked by alpine saints in robes that look startlingly vivid given the chapel's age and the lack of any climate control system.
The chapel is unlocked on Sunday mornings for a short service and on weekday afternoons in July and August; outside those hours, the exterior stonework and the small cemetery beside it are freely accessible and worth ten minutes of quiet attention.
The Surrounding Hamlets
Vallorcine is not one village but a loose federation of hamlets — Le Morzay, Les Jeurs, Le Couteray — each preserving a handful of mazots, the small elevated stone-and-timber granaries built on mushroom-shaped stone pillars to keep rodents out of the grain stores.
Walking the lane between Le Morzay and the chapel takes 20 minutes and passes working vegetable gardens, stacked firewood, and the occasional resident who will cheerfully explain the history of their house if you speak a word of French.
This area also gives the best ground-level view of the Aiguilles Rouges' northern face, a perspective you simply cannot get from the cable cars and one that landscape painters have been returning to for over a century.
