Restaurante La Muralla
Sitting right against the old town walls on Calle Hernán Cortés, La Muralla is the kind of restaurant that doesn't need a marketing budget because half the town eats here on Sunday. The cooking is rooted firmly in the Extremaduran tradition — robust, generous and built around the finest local raw materials.
What to Order
Start with the migas extremeñas — breadcrumbs slow-fried with garlic, chorizo and pimentón until they're crisp and deeply savoury, served with a fried egg and grapes on the side. It's peasant food elevated by good ingredients and patience, and it will ruin you for lesser versions forever.
For a main course, the secreto ibérico a la brasa (grilled Iberian pork secreto cut) is the move — a marbled, flavourful cut that benefits enormously from the quality of the local pigs raised on acorns in the dehesa. Pair it with the house red, a Ribera del Guadiana from a small local bodega, and you've assembled a perfect Extremaduran lunch.
The Atmosphere and Practicalities
The dining room is simple and unpretentious — stone walls, wooden furniture, a television occasionally on in the corner — but the service is warm and the portions are enormous. This is a place where the food is the entire point and nobody is pretending otherwise.
Lunch is the main event, served 13:30–16:00, and the €12–15 menú del día is extraordinary value: three courses, bread, wine and coffee included. Book ahead on weekends, particularly in spring and autumn when hikers and dolmen-seekers fill the town.
