On the granite-studded hills surrounding Valencia de Alcántara you'll find one of the most remarkable concentrations of megalithic monuments in the entire Iberian Peninsula — more than 50 dolmens scattered across the landscape like silent stone sentinels. Walking among them at dawn, when low mist clings to the dehesa, feels genuinely prehistoric.
A Megalithic Landscape Unlike Any Other
The dolmens here date from roughly 4000–2500 BCE and are remarkably well preserved, their massive granite capstones still balanced with quiet authority over burial chambers that once held entire communities' dead. Unlike Stonehenge, you can walk right up and touch them — no ropes, no crowds, just you and four millennia of history.
The most accessible cluster sits just minutes from the town centre along the Cañada de la Vizana path. Pick up the free printed map from the tourist office on Plaza de San Francisco and follow the waymarked route that links the Dolmen del Cajirón, Dolmen de la Melliza and a dozen more in a single two-hour loop.
Planning Your Visit
Early morning or late afternoon light is transformative here — the low sun catches the lichen-covered granite and turns the stones amber and gold. Spring is ideal when the surrounding meadows are carpeted with wildflowers and the air smells of thyme and cistus.
The tourist office can arrange guided visits with a local archaeologist on weekend mornings during spring and summer, which is worth every cent for the contextual storytelling alone. Ask specifically about the Dolmen del Mellizo, whose side slabs still bear faint traces of ochre pigment.
