Fecht River Walk to Vieux-Turckheim
The Fecht river runs along the southern edge of Turckheim before joining the Ill near Colmar, and the flat, shaded towpath that follows it westward towards the hamlet of Vieux-Turckheim is one of the most peaceful short walks in the entire Alsatian wine route. The Route
The path starts at the small car park on Rue de la Fecht, just outside the Porte de Brand, and follows the right bank of the river for about 2.5 km to the old mill buildings at Vieux-Turckheim. The track is flat, wide and unpaved — comfortable for road shoes in dry weather, but worth wearing trail shoes after rain when the clay sections become muddy.
At roughly the halfway point there is a wooden footbridge where you can cross to the left bank and return via a slightly higher path through the edge of the Brand vineyard, creating a satisfying loop of about 5 km total.
Wildlife & Seasons
Spring (April–May) brings nesting kingfishers and the willows in fresh acid-green leaf — the light on the water in the early morning is extraordinary. Autumn turns the riverside poplars gold and the vine rows above amber simultaneously, creating a colour palette that feels almost too saturated to be real.
The Fecht is a designated natural reserve corridor and fishing is restricted to permit holders, which keeps the banks largely undisturbed. Bring binoculars — besides herons and kingfishers, little egrets and black kites are regularly recorded along this stretch.
