The Climb & the View
A well-marked footpath leaves the Porte de Brand and winds uphill through the vine rows in about 15 minutes to a natural terrace at roughly 280 m altitude. From here the whole of Turckheim is laid out below — the three gates clearly visible, the church spire centred, the Fecht river glinting in the valley.
In late September and early October during the vendange (harvest), teams of pickers work the steep rows around you and the air is thick with the smell of ripe Gewurztraminer — an extraordinary sensory experience that no amount of wine tourism brochures can adequately convey.
Practical Trail Info
The path is part of the GR5 long-distance trail and is waymarked with red rectangles. It continues uphill to the ruined Château de l'Engelbourg above Vieux-Thann if you want a longer half-day hike, but the vineyard terrace itself is the reward for most visitors.
Wear proper shoes — the granite soil becomes slippery after rain. A small orientation panel at the start of the path names the Grand Cru parcels and explains the geology, giving context that makes the tasting notes at local caves make much more sense.
