Parque Natural do Río Miño & Fragas do Eume Environs
The stretch of the Miño river flanking Tui is protected habitat where otters, herons, kingfishers and the ancient sea-lamprey coexist in one of the cleanest river ecosystems in Iberia. A network of paths and dirt tracks along the Spanish bank lets you explore it without a car.
Wildlife and Walking
The riverside meadows and willow galleries between Tui and the hamlet of Rebordáns shelter some of the densest otter populations in Galicia. Dawn walks along the unpaved track south of the Paseo Fluvial offer the best chance of a sighting, along with grey herons standing motionless in the shallows and kingfishers flashing electric blue across the current.
In winter and early spring, traditional lamprey fishing using wicker basket traps called pesqueiras can be seen from the riverbank — a practice unchanged for a thousand years and now protected as cultural heritage.
The Romanesque Church at Rebordáns
A 20-minute walk south of the old town along the river path brings you to the Iglesia de San Bartolomé de Rebordáns, a largely intact 12th-century Romanesque church standing alone in a meadow beside the Miño. Its carved capitals and carved doorway are among the finest rural Romanesque sculpture in Galicia and almost no one comes here.
The surrounding meadow is an excellent picnic spot with views across the river into Portugal, and the silence — broken only by birdsong and the occasional train on the international line — is profound.
