Mercado Municipal de Tui
Every Tuesday morning the Mercado Municipal de Tui fills with farmers, fishmongers and cheese-makers from both sides of the Miño, making it one of the liveliest cross-border market experiences in northwest Iberia. Arrive early for the best produce and the most authentic atmosphere.
What to Buy
The stalls overflow with grelos (Galician turnip greens), tetilla and San Simón cheeses, freshly caught lamprey in season (January–April), and locally cured lacón shoulder ham. Portuguese vendors add handmade linen, ceramics and cheaper tobacco products to the mix.
Look for homemade empanada — the Galician stuffed pastry — sold by the slice from trays carried by local women. Tuna and onion is the classic filling; octopus empanada is the treat worth hunting down.
The Market Building and Surrounds
The covered market building on Rúa Colón dates from the early 20th century and has a beautiful iron-and-glass structure that keeps the rain off without dimming the atmosphere.
After shopping, the surrounding streets fill with temporary stalls selling clothes, tools and plants. A cluster of small cafés on the adjacent plaza serve churros and hot chocolate to market-goers from 8:00 onwards.
